AMA, Pharmacists for Life butt heads

The American Medical Association is clashing with Pharmacists for Life after adopting a 2007 report supporting legislation that would require all pharmacists and pharmacy chains to fill legally valid prescriptions, or provide referrals to other pharmacies that will comply.

Pharmacists for Life spokesman C.J. Kahler says the American Medical Association (AMA) is ignoring physicians' rights to use their conscience and refuse a particular type of procedure. He believes the AMA has made a dangerous move.

"The danger is that all citizens of the United States have First Amendment rights to exercise their conscience," Kahler said. "... [A]nd I think [this 2007 report is] a direct infringement on their constitutional rights."

But AMA argues that when pharmacists refuse to dispense certain drugs -- such as birth-control pills, the "morning-after" pill, and lethal doses of drugs for physician-assisted suicide -- they are placing their personal views in potential conflict with the best interests of the patient.

Kahler refutes that argument by noting that all people have conscience rights, and should be able to act on those consciences.
