ACTION ALERT

STATE FOCA BILL INTRODUCED

The Illinois FOCA bill was introduced as HB 2354

Now is the time to educate your representative, on the dangers of the Freedom Of Choice Act (FOCA) and urge them to vote "NO" on HB 2354. If Illinois should pass this bill, abortion would be enshrined as a right in Illinois. We would not be able to have any of the following protections:

1. Partial-birth abortion would be legal
2. There would be no conscience clause for health care workers in Illinois.
3. There would be no informed consent/waiting period.
4. There would be no parental involvement.
5. Taxpayers would pay for abortions.
6. Presently Illinois has a physician only for abortion law. That would be nullified, opening the doors for non-physician abortions.

FOCA states every woman has "a fundamental right" to have an abortion, and no Illinois government may deny or "interfere with" this right. Moreover, no government agency may "discriminate against the exercise of this right when regulating or providing "benefits, facilities, services, or information" to the public. In other words abortion may not be treated differently from live birth -- if a public program supports motherhood it must equally support abortion. FOCA endangers a wide range of laws enacted by the people and their elected Representatives over 35 years.

The time to Fight FOCA is now.

It is imperative that you contact your House representative and Senator and tell them that you are opposed to this radical bill.

Our representatives are meeting this week in Springfield to develop committees. As you know, every bill introduced needs a sponsor and a bill number. It is then assigned to a particular committee. This committee hears the bill and will vote to either kill the bill in committee, or pass it out of committee, to the floor of the House or Senate for a vote.

Now is the time to educate your senator and representative on FOCA....

HELP SUPPORT THE IFRL

Barack Obama is now the President.  It's very frightening, because he is the most pro-abortion President we have ever seen.  In the Senate, he voted against every piece of pro-life legislation and refused to set any limits on abortion.  He is forcing you to pay for abortions with your tax dollars; he fought our ban on partial birth abortion and he even killed a bill in our own Illinois Senate that would have protected babies who survive abortions!   Now, he's vowed that now as President he would make the Freedom of Choice Act one of his top priorities. This man is a real danger to the millions of babies we need to protect.

Would you be willing help us and join us this year with a critical gift?

DAILY NEWS (in full)

Defending life becoming a hate crime?

At least five years ago, Planned Parenthood Chicago Area (PPCA) organized a press conference with their contingent of pro-abortion ministers. These ministers accused the Archdiocese of Chicago with "harassment" of PPCA's customers by holding a prayer vigil with hundreds of people in front of PPCA's abortion clinic at 1200 N. LaSalle in Chicago.

At the same time a bill was being considered in Springfield (called the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act) to outlaw "harassment" of women entering abortion clinics. The bill did not define harassment, but that press conference made it clear what they intended. The bill did not pass and has not been re-introduced so far. Maybe the extra insight provided at the press conference helped stop this bad bill.

Apparently, California was not so fortunate.  California's 2004 "hate crimes" law (SB 1234) led to new training for police in California.   They now receive hate crimes training called "multi-mission criminal extremism."  A new category has been added called "anti-reproductive-rights crimes."  Pro-lifers are automatically suspect.

This perspective of automatic suspicion is seen as a factor in the mid-January conviction of  Rev. Walter Hoye in Oakland.  He was convicted of "harassment" of both employees and patients of an abortion clinic there.  What was Hoye's real offense?  He was effective at reducing the abortionist's business by holding a sign with the message "Jesus loves you and your baby" and offering assistance to women who responded to his sign.

Last week, young people passing out Pro-Life literature to high school students on the public sidewalk in Birmingham, AL were arrested and accused of "criminal trespass."  I suppose their literature was not consistent with the agenda conveyed in the "comprehensive sex ed" these students were getting in class, so this "inaccurate and unscientific" literature could not be tolerated.

"Hate crimes" bills will soon be considered in the U.S. Congress.  All Americans who value freedom of speech should oppose these "hate crimes" bills (H.R. 256 and H.R. 262).  As shown above, Pro-Lifers may be especially at risk of arrest and censorship under such "hate crimes" provisions, making these bills a serious threat to our freedom of speech.  If they became law, they would hinder our ability to save babies from abortion, or even to share Pro-Life information in public.

Sharing information that reflects negatively on any "legal" action (e.g. abortion, morning-after pill, etc.) is seen as "hate speech" because it effectively criticizes those who exercise these legal rights.  Such criticism might also stimulate others to act with hate and violence.  This "hate speech" is deemed to be criminal, as in the "anti-reproductive-rights crime" of discouraging women from getting abortions.  That is how defending life can become a hate crime.  Do not stay silent now, or it may become illegal to say anything later.

National Institutes of Health Prepares for Obama's Expected Approval of Embryonic Stem Cell Research

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) are preparing new guidelines for funding embryonic stem cell research, which destroys human life at its earliest stages, the Washington Post reported today.

Although the Bush administration permitted such research on already existing lines of embryonic stem cells, it prohibited the creation of new stem cell lines.  Advocates of the research anticipate, however, that the Obama administration will lift this restriction soon, although they are expressing some concern over what they perceive as a delay in doing so.

"We were surprised and disappointed it wasn't in there," Amy Comstock Rick of the Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research told the Washington Post, referring to Obama's package of reforms during his first week in office.  "We're wondering why it's taking so long."

However, Obama administration senior advisor David Axelrod told Fox News last Sunday that the president is considering issuing an executive order, and that a decision would be coming soon. Earlier in the month Obama himself said he would be issuing an executive order on stemcells. "I guarantee you that we will sign an executive order for stem cells," he said at a meeting of Congressional Democrats, according to the Washington Times.

Although embryonic stem cell researchers claim that embryonic stem cells may someday be used to replace damaged tissue in patients, so far the procedures haven't yielded a single cure, according to Dr Insoo Hyun of the International Society for Stem Cell Research, who recently told the Scotsman newspaper that "patients need to know there are no proven therapies using embryonic stem cells."

In fact, thus far embryonic stem cell research has only produced harmful results, a point highlighted by the case, currently being widely reported on in the international news media, of an unnamed Israeli boy whose parents took him to Russia for an embryonic stem cell treatment for a neurological disorder. According to the Journal PLoS Medicine, where a study on the case was published, the boy received injections of embryonic stem cells taken from aborted fetuses directly into his brain.  He now suffers from brain tumors caused by the stem cells.

The results in the case are similar to those of other embryonic stem cell experiments, which have also resulted in tumors.

Sean Savitz, a neurologist at Houston's University of Texas Medical School, recently told Scientific American that "there is simply not enough evidence from animal studies, let alone human studies" to indicate that embryonic stem cells can be used in medical therapies, according to the magazine.

Savitz, who is doing research on adult stem cells, told Scientific American that the difference between adult and embryonic stem cells is that the former do not proliferate and grow, but die after conferring their benefit, thus eliminating the possibility of tumor growth.

Adult stem cell research, which does not destroy human life, has been approved for over one hundred treatments, and has been used to reconstruct heart tissue, nerve tissue, a trachea, and other damaged body parts.

Sebelius--Enemy of the Unborn--to HHS?

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on a front-page story in today's New York Times that says Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is the president's top choice as secretary of health and human services:

"Almost all of those working in the Obama administration are pro-abortion, and the expectation is that almost all future appointees will be champions of abortion rights, as well. Fortunately, most are not in a position to affect abortion policy. One glaring exception is the secretary of health and human services. Unfortunately, Gov. Sebelius, a Catholic, may get the job.

"Sebelius' support for abortion is so far off-the-charts that she has been publicly criticized by the last three archbishops of Kansas City. In 1992, when Sebelius was a state legislator, Archbishop Ignatius Strecker rebuked her for leading what he dubbed a 'death-march of the unborn.' When Sebelius became governor in 2003, Archbishop James Keleher, citing her abortion record, asked her to move her inauguration interfaith service from Topeka's Assumption Catholic Church. She refused. The current archbishop, Joseph Naumann, called her out on the issue: he challenged her to name one instance in her long legislative career where she supported limiting abortion rights. She could not. He subsequently asked her not to go to Communion.

"None of these archbishops overreacted. Not only does Sebelius support the now outlawed practice of killing babies who are 80 percent born, so-called partial-birth abortion, she has accepted donations from one of the most notorious practitioners of this Nazi-style act--Dr. George Tiller. Moreover, she even hosted a dinner for him in the Governor's Mansion.

"Just yesterday, the pope admonished House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on this issue. Now we have the specter of another pro-abortion Catholic stiffing the Catholic Church. This is setting up a confrontation that pro-life Catholics will not walk away from. It is also setting up a battle between those Catholics who are honestly pro-life, and those who feign a pro-life position while always embracing the likes of Sebelius."

If abortion is murder, let's act like it and tell it like it is

Anti-life organizations incessantly portray pro-life and pro-family activists as radical, right-wing, woman-hating, clinic-bombing, Bible-thumping nuts.

Aside from simply being bitter, ignorant, domineering bullies, there is a reason why this false façade is being carefully crafted and propagated. See, the thing is, pro-aborts do not 'convert' people to be pro-abortion. They assimilate. They target kids who are still in school and inundate their world with false stereotypes of the angry anti-choice extremists and the big, brave, beautiful pro-choicers.

Do you realize the enormity of this? Think about it. The group that supports pedophilia, the Chinese forced-abortion program, child pornography and third-trimester partial-birth abortions for convenience have successfully labeled individuals who oppose child murder as the extremists! These are the same psychos who view little old ladies with rosary beads outside of abortion clinics as 'scary'.

It's laughable, but the youth of America fall for it.

It never ceases to amaze me how baffled students get on campuses after meeting life activists. It's so surprising to them when the dangerous anti-choice extremists are simply politely dialoguing with students and providing facts-based information. Then things get really confusing when the pro-life kids start getting verbally and physically assaulted on all sides from the peace loving pro-choicers, bless their courageous little hearts.

This false stereotype not only controls the ignorant youth of America, its controlling pro-lifers as well. Too many activists are walking around scared of asserting the truth of abortion for fear of falling into this fabricated joke of a typecast. Too many people get overly defensive and let the pro-aborts control them by playing along with the semantic games. Words like 'murder', 'pro-abort' and 'baby killer' are taboo and are dutifully replaced with words like 'decision', 'pro-choice' and 'abortionist'.

While we're off playing nice, groups like Planned Parenthood continue to systematically attack, slander and smear the image of lifers - all the while innocent children nationwide are being killed in nazi-esque assembly lines. On college campuses - where the false image of pro-lifers is most vital in its effectiveness - if abortion is spoken of in anything other than glowing terms, you're considered an offensive extremist who should be shunned by polite society.

Uh, question. Why should we worry about not offending the baby killers? Killing babies offends me! If speaking the truth boldly is offensive, then pro-lifers need to get offensive. If pro-aborts want to get nasty, we can get nasty. At least our nasty doesn't end up in a bucket of saline or a trash compacter.

We are battling against a wealth of lies and well formed propaganda that is deceiving a nation. It's high time that pro-lifers shatter the false stereotype of "anti-choice extremists" by pointing out who the real extremists are and why.

When I call pro-choicers 'ignorant', it is only because they deny the basics of elementary school biology, modern medical science and common sense. (Ig.nor.ant -- 1. lacking education or knowledge; 2. unaware or uninformed)

When I call pro-choicers 'violent', it is only because in the past six years Human Life International has documented well over 8,500 acts of violence and illegal activities by pro-aborts. These crimes include homicides and other killings, arson, bombings, vandalism and physical and verbal assaults. (Vi.o.lent -- 1. emotional agitation to the point of loss of self-control; 2. prone to commit acts of force)

And when I call pro-choicers 'pathetic', it is only because anyone who knowlingly supports the act of a helpless child being savagely ripped apart and torn piece by bloody piece from its mothers' womb is a pathetic human being. (Pa.thet.ic -- 1. miserably or contemptibly inadequate; 2. causing or evoking pity, sadness or sorrow)

When society recognizes pro-aborts as such, how many impressionable youth do you think will be jumping on the 'pro-choice' bandwagon? Their harebrained logic should be ridiculed. Their idiocy should be laughed at. False pro-life and pro-choice stereotypes need to be challenged.

But we will never win this battle against the preborn when we're playing by their rules. What favors are we doing the youth of America by censoring facts or jumping into the wordplay rhetoric that is the triumph of Planned Parenthood? What good are we doing leaving impressionable kids a safe haven in ignorance?

In late 2007 Jill Stanek conducted a poll in which she asked pro-lifers how they viewed the term, 'pro-aborts'. 24.8% of respondents voted that the phrase was, "Inappropriate, inaccurate and accomplishes nothing." That's 24.8% of pro-lifers that need to grow a pair.

Pro-choice advocates advocate abortion. Therefore they are pro-aborts. Abortionists know that they are killing babies. Therefore they are baby killers. Who cares if they don't like these titles? Forget the word games and tell it as it is. Why should we continue the ineffectual coddling of the vilest aspects of the abortion community?

Mass idiocy persists because complacent people allow it to. If anti-slavery activists insisted on the coddling of slave traders, slave owners and dehumanizing rhetoric that many pro-lifers seem keen on adopting for pro-choicers, we would still have slavery in our midst. We are fighting for victims who do not have voices of their own. We don't have time to play games and let supporters of mass baby slaughter sit cozy in their cocoon of idiocy. If abortion is murder, let's act like it and tell it like it is.

CEDAW Committee Pushes Rwanda, Libya, Others to Legalize Abortion

Rwandan representative fires back, "Maybe we are caring more for those who are living now than about planning to kill babies-to-come."

The committee in charge of overseeing state compliance with the Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) concluded its latest round of meetings, pressing all eight delegations under review on their abortion policies even though the treaty is silent on the subject. Dominica, Armenia, Haiti, Cameroon, Libya, Rwanda, Germany and Guatemala were each questioned on the issue when the committee met in Geneva last month.

In what has become standard practice for the CEDAW committee, members attempted to forge links between high maternal mortality figures and illegal or clandestine abortion in order to pressure states to change their laws.

Committee members pressed Rwanda to hold public debates on its abortion laws and asked if there were any plans related to abortion for girls. The Rwandan representative fired back, "Maybe we are caring more for those who are living now than about planning to kill babies-to-come."

Prior to the meeting, the committee sent written questions to delegations and asked Cameroon to account for how they have implemented CEDAW's previous recommendations to "review the abortion law and increase access to, and availability of, contraception." In its written response, the government of Cameroon chastised the committee for attempting to "elevate" abortion to the rank of a human right.

In addition to Cameroon and Rwanda, Haiti and Guatemala were also specifically told to review and amend their laws regarding abortion in the committee's concluding recommendations.

Abortion is not mentioned in the treaty and CEDAW committee members maintain officially that the treaty is abortion-neutral. Delegations often go along with the committee's line of questioning on abortion by providing data and answering queries on the subject during their reviews with the understanding that the questions are not based upon obligations of the treaty, but on committee members' personal interpretations of treaty.

While the committee claims neutrality on abortion, it has taken it upon itself to reinterpret the hard-law treaty to include abortion in the treaty's provision which calls for a right to health. The recently-released CEDAW committee annual report details the reviews of 16 countries in 2008. Nine of those countries were pressed to liberalize or amend their abortion laws.  In the case of Slovakia, the CEDAW committee went further and criticized the state for protecting the right of health care workers to object to performing abortions as a matter of conscience.

As one of the only remaining countries that has not ratified CEDAW, the United States (US) has come under increasing pressure to do so. New US President Barack Obama has already indicated that he would push for ratification. Proponents of US ratification, like pro-abortion US Senator Barbara Boxer, remain adamant that abortion is not part of CEDAW, despite evidence that CEDAW committee members think otherwise.

The CEDAW committee will next meet in New York in July to review Argentina, Azerbaijan, Bhutan, Denmark, Guinea Bissau, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Japan, Liberia, Spain, Switzerland, Timor L'Este and Tuvalu.  Of those countries, four have already been sent preliminary queries regarding abortion.

African American Pastor Sentenced to Jail for Counselling Women on Public Sidewalk

Yesterday Rev. Walter Hoye of Berkeley, California was sentenced to serve 30-days in county jail after being found guilty on January 15, 2009, of unlawfully approaching a person entering an abortion facility in Oakland.

The court is allowing Hoye to serve his time by an alternative method such as community service. Hoye was also fined a total of $1,130 and ordered to stay away from the abortion facility.

"It is absolutely incredible that in America an individual can be sentenced to jail for engaging in peaceful free speech activity on a public sidewalk," remarked Allison Aranda, Staff Counsel for Life Legal Defense Foundation, which is representing Hoye. "We will appeal."

The African-American pastor is the founder of the Issues4Life Foundation and an outspoken opponent of the genocide of unborn African Americans. He had been accustomed since early 2007 to picket alone or with two other women on the public sidewalk in front of Oakland's abortion clinic and counsel incoming patients, holding a sign reading, "Jesus loves you and your baby. Let us help."

Last spring, however, Oakland city council members passed an ordinance concerning "Access to Reproductive Health Care Facilities." The law prohibits anyone from approaching within eight feet of women entering an abortion facility, without their consent. The maximum penalty was established as one year in jail and/or a $2000 fine.

Hoye was arrested in May 2008 and charged with intimidating the abortuary staff, in addition to violating the distance rule, and was issued a restraining order.  The intimidation order was later dropped after video evidence showed that abotuary staff had lied about Hoye's behavior in front of the facility.

According to 2004 statistics from the National Center for Health Statistics, about 37 percent of pregnancies of black women end in abortion, compared with 12 percent for non-Hispanic white women and 19 percent for Hispanic women.

Attorneys Catherine Short and Mike Millen, who also represented Rev. Hoye at trial, are also engaged in a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the ordinance and are hopeful it will be struck down.

Secret Service Investigate Pro-Lifer Over Sign

The police officers who stopped Oklahoma City motorist Chip Harrison and confiscated a sign from his car told him he has a right to his beliefs, but the Secret Service "could construe this as a threat against President Obama," according to the incident report released this morning. The sign, which read "Abort Obama Not the Unborn," was returned to Harrison later that day, the report said. According to Harrison, the supervisor said the Secret Service had been contacted on the matter and had told them the sign was not a threat to the president. But his run-in with the law wasn't over yet. ''The Secret Service called and said they were at my house," Harrison said. After talking to his attorney, Harrison went home where he met the Secret Service. ''When I was on my way there, the Secret Service called me and said they weren't going to ransack my house or anything ... they just wanted to (walk through the house) and make sure I wasn't a part of any hate groups."

Pastor Gets 30 Days In Jail for Speaking to Woman at California Abortion Clinic, Fined $1,130

The Rev. Walter Hoye of Berkeley, California was sentenced to serve 30 days in county jail and fined $1,130.00 by Judge Hing of the Alameda Superior Court after being found guilty on January 15, 2009, of unlawfully approaching a person entering an abortion clinic in Oakland. The court is allowing Rev. Hoye to serve his time by an alternative method like community service. Rev. Hoye was also ordered to stay away from the clinic. However, Rev. Hoye refused this term of probation and would not agree to a stay-away order. Nonetheless, the judge is having the order drawn up and refused to accept Rev. Hoye’s decision not to agree to the stay-away order. "It is absolutely incredible that in America an individual can be sentenced to jail for engaging in peaceful free speech activity on a public sidewalk," remarked Allison Aranda, Staff Counsel for Life Legal Defense Foundation. Allison Aranda further stated "Rev. Hoye has a legal right to refuse onerous conditions of probation. Rev. Hoye will not and should not agree to give up his free speech rights. We will appeal."
