Probation levied against abortion clinic

A Planned Parenthood clinic in Alabama has been placed on probation after an undercover probe by the student-led pro-life group Live Action.

The investigation -- prompted by one of Live Action's video "stings" over the last year -- revealed that the Birmingham facility was encouraging minors to have abortions and not turning over information to authorities identifying the abuser, as required by law. Eric Johnston of the Alabama Pro-Life Coalition tells OneNewsNow that the state conducted its own probe of the clinic.

"The Alabama State Department of Health put them on probation and set up, I think, some mechanisms that would keep that from happening in the future and would be sure that Planned Parenthood was not doing this," he explains.

Johnston says he is satisfied with the state's action -- for now. But he says Live Action's efforts have revealed that the problem spreads beyond the Birmingham Planned Parenthood clinic.

"It's been a problem that we've always had suspicions of virtually all abortion clinics," he laments, "that they would take in minors, do the abortions, and not report that it was probably statutory rape -- which would be an older individual sexually abusing the minor girl."

Johnston notes that no men are apparently to be prosecuted in the Birmingham cases discovered so far, but urges that laws be enforced for the protection of minors. The Planned Parenthood facility has until next week to present an acceptable plan to resolve the situation.
