What information?  There was no information on long term use of this vaccine.  There was no information on the efficacy of the vaccine.  The vaccine was fast tracked, so their was no information on side effects or morbidity or mortality.  Actually, there was not a lot of information on the Human Pappilomavirus.  What was known was that the vaccine maker, Merck, was not liable for any complications from the vaccine.

Now two years later, we hear a lot about the vaccine.  Now it has a track record.  Recently, Dr. Diane Harper, who was one of the lead researchers for the HPV vaccine Gardasil, said, "young girls and their parents should receive a more complete warning about the vaccines risks and long term effectiveness."  She further stated in response to the Center for Disease Control recommendation that girls receive the vaccine at age eleven, "this would put them at harm from side effects for no benefit.  The benefit to public health is nothing.  There is no reduction in cervical cancers.  They are just postponed."  There is no data indicating Gardasil is effective for more than five years.

Dr. Scott Ratner, in an interview with CBS News, after one of his teenage daughters became seriously after the vaccine, stated, "she'd have been better off getting cervical cancer (often completely curable if detected early enough through tests, such as a PAP smear).  My daughter went from a varsity lacrosse player at Choate to a chronically ill, steroid dependent patient with autoimmune myofascitis."

Let's hope abstinence is stressed at home rather than vaccination.

Two years ago, the Illinois General Assembly, following the lead of several states, considered legislation that would mandate Gardasil vaccination for all sixth graders.  These bills were introduced in both the House and Senate, HB 115 and SB 10.  Fortunately, these bills, in their original form, did not pass.  What did pass was that information should be provided on the vaccine to physicians and parents.  This left the decision in the hands of the parents and their family doctors.
