NARAL Backs off
One of the country's leading abortion rights organizations is no longer opposing a bill supported by pro-life organizations.
(BP) NARAL Pro-Choice America -- formerly the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League -- has withdrawn its opposition to the Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act, which would require that women be informed about the pain their unborn children will experience if they undergo late-term abortions.
"Pro-choice Americans have always believed that women deserve access to all the information relevant to their reproductive health decisions," NARAL President Nancy Keenan said, according to LifeNews.com. Is Adoption Really an Option?
(FRC) A curious item appeared on Planned Parenthood's homepage this weekend, adoption. Apparently America's number one abortion provider feels the need to acknowledge the choice of adoption, now. Hillary Clinton and her crowd have made this vogue in recent days, trying to put a kinder, gentler face on their commitment to legal abortions and attempting to shore up the millions of dollars they receive from Congress. The problem with Planned Parenthood's new found moderation is that it belies the numbers. Of the 123 Planned Parenthood affiliates nationwide that manage nearly 850 "health centers," they can only point to one lone office as providing adoption services, and this as a separate agency that is simply allowed under Planned Parenthood's roof.

Planned Parenthood Resignation Prompts Questions
Does Gloria Feldt's stepping down signal a white flag from abortion supporters?
(FNIF) Pro-family leaders are expressing surprise at the departure of Gloria Feldt from Planned Parenthood--the largest abortion provider in the United States. They say we probably should have seen it coming and wonder if Feldt's departure is an indication that high profile abortion supporters think they've lost the battle.
No reason was given for the resignation, and Planned Parenthood didn't return Family News in Focus' phone calls seeking comment. But Dr. Wanda Franz, president of the National Right to Life Committee, wonders about whether the sea change in American public opinion on abortion had something to do with it.
"Perhaps the clear evidence that the majority of the American people are shifting in a pro-life direction has affected the thinking of the people . . . in the organization," Franz said. Click here for the full story
Planned Parenthood President Resigns
(CNSNews.com) Planned Parenthood is looking for a new president, after Gloria Feldt abruptly resigned on Thursday -- no reason given.
Her departure comes at a time when pro-life groups have a pro-life president, George W. Bush, backing their agenda; and as some Democrats are now willing to admit there should be room in their party for people who hold for pro-life views.
"We honor Gloria Feldt's contributions to Planned Parenthood and to the global movement for reproductive justice," said Planned Parenthood Federation of America Chair Don Love in a statement on the group's website. "Her leadership has resulted in significant achievements for the organization and for women and families worldwide."
Wire reports quoted PPFA spokeswoman Elizabeth Toledo as saying that Feldt "made her decision to step down after a long 30-year career, and she has not made any announcements about her next step." Click here for the full story

Planned Parenthood: More Abortions, Fewer Clinics
(CNSNews.com) The Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the nation's most frequent provider of abortions, is performing more of the procedures than ever -- albeit in fewer clinics -- and relying increasingly on the revenue generated from abortions, according to its Fiscal Year 2004 annual report.
With other services becoming marginalized in Planned Parenthood's overall business, the organization relied on abortion for 34 percent of its clinic income from July 1, 2003, to June 30, 2004, up from 32 percent in Fiscal Year 2002 and FY 2003.
After a spike in private contributions two years ago, Planned Parenthood saw those donations drop 17 percent last year, but U.S. taxpayer assistance in the form of government grants reached record levels.
Numerous calls to Planned Parenthood offices in both New York City and Washington, D.C., seeking comment for this article, were not returned, but a survey of newspaper stories regarding the closing of 11 of the organization's clinics during Fiscal Year 2004 revealed a common cause.

Planned Parenthood: 'Morning After' Pill Would Decrease Abortions
(CNSNews.com) - America's number one provider of abortions this week is urging the federal government to make the "morning after" pill available to women without a prescription because, the group contends, it would reduce the number of abortions in the U.S.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America clinics already dispense the drug regimen, also known as Plan B, in their "Emergency Contraception Kits."
In May 2004, the Food and Drug Administration rejected a bid to offer the drug over the counter because it said the application "did not demonstrate that Plan B could be used safely by young adolescent women for emergency contraception" without a doctor's input, according to the FDA website. Violence Fosters Violence
(PFL) The January 2005 Boston Magazine Online carries the story "Confessions of an Abortion Doctor". The anonymous abortionist says, "I have the utmost respect for lifeut also believe that I'm ending it for good reasons." Yet she withheld her name for fear that someone might take her life. The shootings of abortionists years ago, which she recalls vividly, scare her.
But doesn't she realize that the words of those who would justify killing people like her are simply an echo of her own? They say, "I have the utmost respect for life...but also believe that I'm ending it for good reasons."
It's the same argument, and the same fallacy, just applied to a different group of people. It's simply a variation on the old heresy that "the end justifies the means." The "good reasons," whatever they may be, can never justify the direct taking of a human life. Click here for the full story

How does 'moderating pro-choice position' translate?
(WorldNetDaily.com) It was in the Dallas airport early last month that I first sensed a change in the wind. At a news stand, I noticed Texas Monthly magazine promoting an article on its cover titled, "Am I really Pro-choice?"
What's this, I wondered a publication obviously targeting hip Southwesterners ("The right way to do a shot of tequila" was another cover title) questioning a topic that was sacrosanct to its curried liberal readers?
The author, Gary Cartwright, wrote a cliched yet strangely guilt-ridden column re-evaluating his pro-abortion position from the standpoint that yes, he was still right after all these years, but only after being given reassurances by pro-abortion clergy, whom he quoted extensively.

STOPP notes that last year Planned Parenthood increased the numbers of surgical abortions at its own facilities by 6.1 percent to 244,628. The pro-life group added that the figures indicate that Planned Parenthood has surgically killed 3.5 million babies since 1970.

A "Less Satisfying Stance"
(NRLC) I've twice promised we'd talk about Frances Kissling's long essay that appeared in the Winter edition of "Conscience," the house organ of the inaptly named Catholics for a Free Choice.
Having now read her 7,446-word-long essay three times, clearly what's more interesting than her recycled rhetoric is the response to it from the usual pro-abortion suspects. That the Eleanor Smeals of this world resist what they understand Kissling to be saying, however, does not automatically mean that the line the President of Catholics for a Free Choice is peddling is one non-partisans, let alone pro-lifers, ought to purchase. When we examine what Kissling says, we instantly realize there is much less there than meets the eye.

Efforts are under way to keep the abortion provider out of public education.
(FNIF) Campaigns to remove Planned Parenthood's influence from the nation's schools continue to blossom, with efforts now under way in Colorado Springs, Colo., and Sarasota, Fla.
The uprisings are the result of parents learning about the organization's agenda and not liking what they hear.
"There are school districts in the country that have contracts with Planned Parenthood," said Mark Crutcher, president of Life Dynamics, a pro-life organization that opposes Planned Parenthood being allowed to teach America's children about sex. "They're the nation's number one abortion profiteer. Why on earth would they want to lower teen pregnancy?"
