United Nations Calls for Ban on all Human Cloning
(NRLC) After more than three years of deadlock, delegates to the United Nation's legal committee, by a vote of 71 to 35, accepted a declaration calling on all nations to enact laws prohibiting all forms of human cloning. The U.N. has called on Member Slates to adopt urgent legislation outlawing all cloning practices saying that "they are incompatible with human dignity and the protection of human life:'
Jeanne E. Head, R.N., U.N. Representative for National Right to Life, called today's vote a great victory. "We are pleased that U.N. delegates have finally acted to protect human life with today's U.N. Declaration which urges banning all forms of human cloning," stated Head. "Cloning, and killing living human embryos to obtain their stem cells for experimentation is unethical and unnecessary. Adult Stem Cells are the only stem cells that have helped thousands of patients, including those with spinal cord injuries and diseases like Parkinson's, and new clinical uses expand almost weekly." UN Passes Declaration to Ban All Forms of Human Cloning
(LifeSiteNews.com) The United Nations has called on Member States to adopt urgent legislation outlawing all cloning practices "as they are incompatible with human dignity and the protection of human life." The declaration, introduced by Honduras, also calls on countries to "prevent the exploitation of women." Cloning requires harvesting eggs from women.
The decision ends three years of deadlock caused by countries seeking approval for cloning research. The United Kingdom, Belgium and Singapore led the opposition for a total ban, insisting that a ban only apply to letting a cloned human live while allowing cloned embryos to be used for research which would kill them. The declaration represents the international community uniting in condemning all human cloning as exploitative and unethical.
At the insistence of delegates from developing countries who feared their women were being turned into "egg farms," the declaration calls on Member States to introduce measures to prevent the exploitation of women. Delegates expressed concern that poor women would be targeted to extract the vast numbers of eggs that would be needed, inevitably inflicting painful, dangerous and invasive procedures on vulnerable women. United Nations Vote Set for Today On Human Cloning Now Doubtful
(LifeSiteNews.com) Four years of deadlock were to come to an end today at the United Nations where delegates were expected to vote on whether to accept a declaration calling on all nations to enact laws prohibiting human cloning.
For the past week diplomats have been behind closed doors seeking to hammer out an agreement. At first many were hopeful that a declaration would be accepted by a consensus, with the possibility that severe resistance would force a vote. Such a vote would take place at 11:30am today.
However, it is possible that some member states opposed to the declaration will call for a "no action" vote which, if passed, would once again delay action by the UN.
Nigel Cameron, a leading bioethicist and the President of the Institute on Biotechnology and the Human Future, said it is time for the UN to address this serious question. "The international community is finally going to have to come to terms with the gravest threat that has ever been posed to human dignity," he said. Click here for the full story
U.N. Delegates To Attempt To Reach Nonbinding Declaration on Human Reproductive Cloning Ban
(Kaisernetwork) A United Nations working group of diplomats from countries on "both sides of the bitterly divisive debate" over human cloning will meet on Monday in an attempt to reach an agreement on a nonbinding statement to "guide" countries on the issue, the AP/Long Island Newsday reports (Linton, AP/Long Island Newsday, 2/14). The legal committee of the U.N. General Assembly 59th Session in November 2004 rejected a vote on a treaty banning human cloning and instructed the working group to discuss a nonbinding statement proposed by Italy. Sixty-one countries, including the United States, believe that all scientific research using cells extracted from cloned embryos should be banned immediately and supported a Costa Rican proposal to ban both reproductive and research cloning. UNFPA Earmarks $26 Million for Philippine De-Population Program
De-Population Movement Making Strides in Philippines
(LifeSiteNews.com) The Philippine Ambassador to the UN, Lauro Baja Jr., said the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has allotted the equivalent of US $26 million to fund "reproductive health projects" in the Philippines through 2009. In UNspeak, "reproductive health" is a standard euphemism for sterilization, artificial contraceptives and abortion.
In many cases the euphemistic language popular with UN abortion-supporters is coupled with the jargon of the environmental movement that equates human population with environmental damage. Baja employed this kind of language in describing the allocation, saying it "aims to improve the reproductive health of the people through better population management and sustainable human development."
Baja said the UNFPA program will focus on reducing fertility, improving maternal health, promoting adolescent reproductive health, and preventing HIV-AIDS.
Campaign Life Coalition's International Affairs Officer, and long-time lobbyist at the United Nations, Samantha Singson said, "Having observed UN meetings for years now, we know that the terms used by Mr. Baja are often used as euphemisms for abortion and related activities. They are going to have to fight the constitution on this if they want to introduce abortion or anything like it in the Philippines." Click here for the full story
UN Committee on Disabled leaves Euthanasia Question Open
(LifeSiteNews.com) A United Nations committee drafting an international treaty on the disabled has left questionable terminology that may open the door to euthanasia for the disabled, according to a Catholic Family & Human Rights Institute (C-FAM) Friday Fax.
The treaty has been under negotiation since 2001. The committee completed the fifth in a series of two-week sessions Friday, with a proposed session set for August.
One article is especially troubling to pro-lifers: a text making illegal all "medical or related interventions" that are conducted upon a disabled individual without their "free and informed consent." Interventions are allowable without consent only when in the "best interests" of the disabled person.
A National Right to Life Committee spokesman asked the group to remove the language, saying it "would also prevent life saving interventions for persons attempting suicide." Click here for the full story

United Nations Grants National Abortion Federation NGO Status
(LifeSiteNews.com) The United Nations Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) recommended 22 new NGOs for consultative status last week, including the US National Abortion Federation (NAF).
The new status means that NAF will have a greater voice at the UN: organizations that have consultative status can attend meetings of the Council, circulate statements, speak at meetings and propose items for the Council's agenda. Click here for the full story
Consumer Reports cites U.N. document In response to criticism about report pushing abortion
(WorldNetDaily.com) Consumer Reports is citing the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights in its defense of a report on birth control and abortion that has pro-lifers canceling their subscriptions to the magazine.
"[Consumer Union's] mission is to ensure a fair, just, and safe marketplace for all consumers, and we support the consumer's right to be informed (part of the United Nations charter on human rights)," reads an e-mail from customer relations staffer Michael Dempsey responding to complaints. U.N. Offers 'Reproductive' Aid to Tsunami Victims
(FNIF) What kind of aid is headed for Southeast Asia? The United Nations has some strange ideas on what those affected need.
What kind of help does Southeast Asia need to recover from the tidal wave that swamped the region and killed tens of thousands? It's likely your list won't include condoms and portable abortion devices but that's part of the aid being sent by the United Nations. Click here for the full story
UNFPA Calls for US $28m in Funding to Supply Condoms to Victims of Tsunami
(LifeSiteNews.com) The United Nations Population Fund, the UNFPA, is calling for US $28 million in donations to re-establish "reproductive health services," in the Tsunami-stricken regions of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives.
The UNFPA has developed "reproductive health kits," developed for "the initial acute phase of the emergency," according to C-FAM. The kits include: "'condoms,' 'oral and injectable contraceptives' including the abortifacient morning-after pill, and 'IUD[s].'"
UNFPA, which claims to not be providing or promoting abortion services, also provides "manual vacuum aspirators, portable abortion devices that are easily used in primitive conditions such as refugee areas," in its kits. Click here for the full story
Bush Administration Set to Refuse Funds to Pro-Abortion UNFPA Again
Evidence of China's on-going coercive abortion policies determine decision
(LifeSiteNews.com) WASHINGTON, The Bush Administration is set to once again deny an allotted $34 million to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). That message came loud and clear Tuesday as Arthur Dewey, the U.S. assistant secretary of State for the bureau of population, refugees, and migration made a presentation to the House International Relations Committee.
Investigations conducted by the U.S. Department of State find that China is still using coercion to enforce its "one-child" per couple policy, said Dewey. The evidence, he told the Committee, "clearly showed us that the large fees and penalties for out-of-plan births assessed in implementing China's regulations are tantamount to coercion that leads to abortion." HLI to Expose Kissinger-United Nations' Population Control Program Used to Control Developing Nations & Their Natural Resources 12/7/2004 1:16 PM
(HLI) FRONT ROYAL, VA, will hold a press conference this Thursday-December 9, 2004, at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET-to release Kissinger Report 2004: A Retrospective on NSSM-200.
HLI officials and leaders from several of the 13 targeted nations will expose how National Security Study Memorandum 200-primarily authored by then-Secretary of State Henry Kissinger-systematically instituted population control programs in the name of national security to gain unimpeded access to these countries' natural resources. The plan called for collusion among the U.S. government, the United Nations and non-governmental organizations like International Planned Parenthood Federation. Click here for the full story
John Danforth Resigns as US Ambassador to UN - Pro-Life Replacement Sought 12/6/2004 1:13 PM
(LifeSiteNews.com) WASHINGTON, The Bush administration has most impressively demonstrated its commitment to the right to life and the dignity of the family through its actions at the United Nations. One key player in that development is resigning.
John Danforth, the US Ambassador to the United Nations, has resigned from his post and pro-life Americans and others around the world will be looking to President Bush to replace him with another principled, pro-life, pro-family ambassador.
Danforth, 68, said in his letter of resignation that he was going to be spending more time with his wife. News reports indicate his wife was recently ill.
Danforth is a well-known advocate for the pro-life cause, maintaining a 100 percent pro-life voting record during his several years in politics. Click here for the full story
Maltese Prime Minister and Bishop's Conference Reject United Nations Abortion Push 12/2/2004 1:10 PM
(LifeSiteNews.com) VALLETTA, A United Nations committee recommendation to Malta to legalize abortion has been rejected by Maltese Prime Minister Dr Lawrence Gonzi, and condemned by the Roman Catholic Bishops of Malta.
LifeSiteNews.com first revealed the UN directive to Malta yesterday. The United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, in official recommendations to Malta, released November 26 said, "The Committee urges the State party to review its legislation on abortion and consider exceptions to the general prohibition of abortion for cases of therapeutic abortions and when the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest."
In comments to LifeSiteNews.com, Edgar Galea-Curmi, head of the Prime Minister's Secretariat, said: "The Maltese Government does not agree with the Committee's recommendation to review Maltese legislation on abortion." Galea-Curmi concluded, "We consider that abortion is in complete contradiction with one of the main tenets of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, namely that the best interests of children are paramount." United Nations Now Pushes Chile and Malta to Legalize Abortion 12/1/2004 2:25 PM
(LifeSiteNews.com) GENEVA, A United Nations committee has urged two of the five countries in the world which prohibit all abortions to legalize abortion. Chile and Malta were before the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, earlier this month. The committee ruled on Friday, that the countries should allow abortion in cases of rape and incest.
The committee is set up to monitor compliance with the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR). Like all other UN documents, the CESCR does not officially contain clauses requiring the legalization of abortion.
Nonetheless, in official recommendations to Chile, released November 26, the CESCR committee said, "The Committee recommends that the State party revise its legislation and decriminalize abortion in cases of therapeutic abortions and when the pregnancy is the result of rape or incest."
