Will Co. Legislators Urged to Block Blagojevich's 2nd Annual Sneak Funding Attempt

Vote NO on Taxpayer Funded Human Cloning and Embryo Research

MOKENA - Mar 24, 2006 Right to Life of Will County sent all state senators and representatives with constituents in Will County a letter today urging them to vote NO on Gov. Rod Blagojevich's second attempt in two years to sneak funding through the legislature that would force taxpayers to underwrite human cloning and embryonic stem cell research.

Senate Bill 3170 would designate $15 million to the Illinois Department of Public Health for nondescript "research" for Fiscal Year 2007.

"But we are on to Blagojevich's schemes this year," said Right to Life of Will County president Jill Stanek. "Blagojevich hid $10 million in the 2006 budget for nondescript medical 'research' that was later used to finance the human cloning and embryonic stem cell research program he forced on us by executive order. Coincidentally, $15 million is what the governor recently said he wanted to fund his project in 2007."

Because SB3170 has been introduced in the Senate, Right to Life of Will County is particularly focused on Democrat state Senators Maggie Crotty, Debbie Halvorson, and A. J. Wilhelmi.

All Republican senators have already signed a letter pledging to vote NO to any appropriation that would fund research involving the manipulation and destruction of human life.

"It is up to Democrats to stop Blagojevich's latest attempt to force Illinois taxpayers to fund this fiscally risky and morally repugnant research," said Stanek.

"All Democrats who voted YES for last year's budget are now on record as supporting taxpayer funded human cloning and embryonic stem cell research," concluded Stanek. "The only way to attempt to undo last year's vote is to vote NO to any bill or budget that includes funding for it this year." #30
